If you can believe it, this was my very first family session in DC at the monuments! And I’ve called myself a DC baby and family photographer for almost 10 years? Huh? 😉 I feel the shame. I’ve always wanted to do a session on the national mall at sunrise, definitely a bucket list type of session. But finding the family who actually wanted to be up, dressed and ready by 7am wasn’t so easy. Thankfully these guys were 100% troopers on this early morning that felt more like winter than the mid October day we were expecting! But at least the sun was shining!
Now that I’ve experienced sunrise at the national mall, I thought I’d share a couple tips in case your family wants to capture these iconic DC looks with me too!
1 – Sunrise is definitely the way to go. No tourists in the background, just a few joggers and some fellow DC photographers and their clients. Plus parking was a breeze! 2 – Arrive at least 15 minutes early. This gives you time to check all the last minute details – no bulky phones in pockets, give everyone’s hair a final brush, quick booger checks, etc. It also gives you time to find parking and walk to our meeting place without feeling rushed. 3 – Be ready for a little walking. As with most of my outdoor sessions, I like to explore and be on the move. Make sure everyone’s shoes are comfortable in addition to adorable 😉 and try to store any extra bags in the car.
Does your family need to be captured in downtown Washington DC? (the answer is yes!) Cherry blossoms will be here before you know it! Let’s schedule an amazing session! Contact me to start planning 🙂
