Capturing my clients in their homes is one of my most favorite parts of being a Washington, DC family photographer. I believe there is something so special about documenting your family in your own space. These are the memories you will want to be able to look back on when your kids are grown. In-home family sessions always have my heart and I feel so lucky that my clients love them too! In-home newborn sessions, in particular, are a very popular session choice so I figured this would be a good space to share this gorgeous family and some simple tips to help you make your session easy-peasy!
This family signed up for my Watch Me Grow plan which captures milestone’s throughout baby’s 1st year. I first saw them at a sunflower field for a maternity mini session. Just a few short months later we were meeting for their new little boy’s newborn session! I love planning these memorable moments for my clients and watching their family grow from behind my lens!
Tip #1 for your in-home newborn session:
Plan for a little bit longer stretch of time than a regular family session. Newborns can be a bit needy 😉 and we will probably need to pause a few times for diaper changes, feeding breaks, etc. I advise clients to plan for about 2-3 hours for their in-home newborn session. I never place time restrictions on newborn sessions, so if your baby needs to eat every hour – that’s ok!
Tip #2 for your in-home newborn session:
Try to feed your newborn as often as possible in the twelve hours leading up to our session. A tired baby with a full tummy results in a very sleepy baby and cooperative model.
Tip #3 for your in-home newborn session:
Don’t worry about having the ‘perfect’ home for your in-home newborn session. As a mom of two, I know how busy life can be with a new baby. As a DC family photographer for the past ten years, I’ve learned how to make any home a gorgeous space to photograph. All I need is one good window to create some magic for you 🙂 But don’t worry – after booking a session with me, I send each client a helpful How to Prepare guide for each session!
Tip #4 for your in-home newborn session:
Simple is best when it comes to clothing choices. Newborns are cutest in a simple swaddle wrap or a plain white onesie. I always suggest having one well fitting onesie or sleeper outfit for newborn sessions (sometimes this means buying preemie size). I also provide wardrobe consultations for each of my clients and love helping to create the perfect clothing combo for sessions!
